Dominican president demands improved security for Haiti relations

During a joint press conference with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on September 6, 2024, Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader laid out the conditions needed for normalizing relations with Haiti. He identified the primary obstacle as Haiti’s security situation.

Abinader highlighted that the ongoing insecurity in Haiti threatens not only the Haitian people but also the Dominican Republic and the entire region. He emphasized that a significant improvement in security is necessary before any rapprochement between the two neighboring countries can be considered.

“As long as security in Haiti is not restored, fully normalizing relations between our countries will be impossible,” stated Abinader. He noted that the Dominican Republic cannot shoulder the consequences of Haiti’s instability alone, citing issues such as migratory pressures and border concerns.

Secretary Blinken reiterated the U.S. commitment to working with Haitian authorities to restore security and stability. “We recognize that the situation in Haiti affects the region and the world. That’s why the United States is increasing its support to help the Haitian government tackle insecurity and foster economic development,” Blinken said.

Despite these challenges, Abinader assured that the Dominican Republic remains prepared to continue its humanitarian support for Haiti, particularly in health and education.
