Garry Conille: Prime minister sets up headquarters in the heart of a conflict zone

In a move that has already sparked controversy, Prime Minister Garry Conille has relocated to the Grand Headquarters of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FADH) at Champ de Mars. This bold decision is more than just a change of address; it appears to be a strategic maneuver amidst an unprecedented security crisis gripping the nation.

According to sources close to the matter, the military headquarters will undergo renovations this week to accommodate a new annex of the Prime Minister’s office. Garry Conille, who now holds the dual role of Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, plans to centralize his operations from this new stronghold, signaling his intent to regain control over the security situation.

By assuming this dual role, Conille aims to enhance coordination between national security forces, with joint meetings between the Haitian National Police (PNH) and the FADH now set to take place at this new location. “This sends a strong message: security is our top priority,” said a source close to Conille.

The choice of Champ de Mars is no coincidence. This historic site has become a battleground since February 29, witnessing violent clashes between law enforcement and the criminal group “Viv Ansanm.” By setting up his base in this symbolic location, Conille seems determined to show that the government has not surrendered the capital to criminals.

However, this decision raises many questions. Is this a desperate attempt to reclaim control of a country on the brink, or a show of force that could further escalate an already volatile situation? Only time will tell.
