Miragoâne Tanker Explosion: 24 Dead, 19 Burn Victims Evacuated
A tragic fuel tanker explosion in Miragoâne has resulted in severe burns for 19 individuals, who will be evacuated to Port-au-Prince for specialized medical treatment. The explosion occurred in the afternoon, creating a scene of chaos and distress.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tanker’s reservoir was punctured after colliding with another truck that was broken down and stationary on the road. This collision led to a devastating explosion. In total, the explosion has claimed 24 lives, with approximately forty people suffering second and third-degree burns.
Initially, the explosion victims were treated at local healthcare facilities. Eight patients were transferred to the Saint Boniface Hospital in Fond des Blancs, while four others were directed to the Immaculée Conception Hospital in Les Cayes. However, due to the severity of their injuries, specialized treatments are required, prompting the organization of a medical flight to transfer 19 critically burned individuals to hospitals in Port-au-Prince.
The Ministry of Public Health, in collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), has swiftly taken measures to ensure the safe transfer of the victims to specialized medical centers in the capital. The patients require advanced care and specialized treatments available only at these facilities.
