Diplomatic Tensions: Haiti and the Dominican Republic Dispute Expulsion Claims
Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dominique Dupuy, recently stated that there has been a “reduction” in the number of Haitians being expelled from the Dominican Republic in recent weeks. In a statement shared on social media, accompanied by a video, Dupuy emphasized Haiti’s commitment to building a more cooperative relationship with the Dominican Republic for the mutual benefit of both countries.
However, these remarks were quickly challenged by the Dominican government. The Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement rejecting the claims made by the Haitian minister, calling them “incorrect.” Dominican officials insisted that these statements did not accurately reflect the country’s current immigration policies.
The Dominican government reiterated its intention to continue its efforts to repatriate undocumented Haitian migrants, with plans to deport approximately 10,000 individuals per week. According to Dominican authorities, this strategy is part of their broader approach to controlling migration and ensuring national security.
The disagreement over these contrasting statements further complicates the already tense relationship between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, particularly regarding migration issues. Both countries will likely need to engage in further dialogue to resolve these differences and prevent further strain in their diplomatic relations.
