Garry Conille and Lula Strengthen Haiti-Brazil Cooperation
Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille held talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the 79th United Nations General Assembly, marking a significant step toward enhancing bilateral relations between Haiti and Brazil. The meeting, held on the sidelines of global discussions, focused on cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the areas of sustainable development and international advocacy.
In a message posted on his X account (formerly Twitter), Garry Conille highlighted Brazil’s renewed support for Haiti. “Brazil reaffirmed its commitment to support Haiti in developing a sustainable development framework and in its advocacy efforts to mobilize the international community to assist the country,” he wrote.
This meeting comes at a critical time for Haiti, which is grappling with major challenges in security, governance, and development. Since taking office, Prime Minister Conille has been working to restore international trust and secure new partnerships to help rebuild the country’s struggling economy. Brazil’s support could prove vital in this effort, given its prominent role in past peacekeeping missions in Haiti.
Discussions between the two leaders also touched on concrete initiatives to boost cooperation in key sectors such as agriculture, education, and infrastructure. President Lula da Silva expressed his intention to increase technical assistance and facilitate access to development programs for Haiti.
As the international community faces criticism for its perceived inaction toward Haiti, this meeting could pave the way for greater solidarity among Global South nations, offering renewed hope for the Caribbean nation’s recovery.
