Global Inaction on Haiti: Guterres Slams Failure to Fund Stabilization Mission
In a powerful statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly criticized the global community for failing to provide the necessary funds to support the international mission to stabilize Haiti.
Speaking at a press conference in New York, Guterres expressed his frustration, calling the situation “unacceptable” and unjustifiable.
“When it’s about funding wars, money is always available. But when it’s about saving lives, even a relatively small amount becomes an insurmountable challenge,” he said.
The mission aims to boost security in Haiti, a country already overwhelmed by a humanitarian crisis worsened by gang violence. Despite ongoing appeals, the funds required to start the mission have not yet been secured.
“This is a test for the international community,” Guterres added. “In the face of suffering, inaction is not an option. Member states must step up and take responsibility.”
