Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele Pledges Support to Haiti in Gang Violence Fight
The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has committed to supporting Haiti in its fight against gangs, citing striking similarities between the atrocities perpetrated in both countries. In a statement on Sunday evening, Bukele remarked that the shocking images of bandits killing and feasting on their victims echoed a dark time in his own country’s history.
“What we are seeing in Haiti, these acts of barbarism, are remarkably similar to what we experienced in El Salvador a few years ago,” President Bukele said.
Bukele’s remarks come in the wake of the release of videos depicting brutal acts of violence perpetrated by gangs in Haiti. The images have shocked the world and sparked widespread outrage.
“Gangs bathing with the skulls of their victims,” Bukele added, underscoring the extreme brutality of the gangs operating in both countries. He also questioned claims that these gangs were unbeatable, asserting that his own country had managed to eradicate them despite doubts from experts.
“All the ‘experts’ said they could not be defeated because they were ‘an integral part of our society.’ They were wrong. We wiped them out,” he asserted.
Bukele did not specify what kind of support El Salvador intended to provide to Haiti, but he clearly expressed solidarity and willingness to help end the gang violence ravaging the Caribbean nation.
