UN Urges Haiti to Complete Electoral Council Amid Political Uncertainty

Maria Isabel Salvador, head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), has intensified calls for the Haitian government to finalize the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP). She stressed the importance of swiftly appointing all members of the council to advance political transition and pave the way for critical elections. Despite the nomination of seven of the nine required members over 27 days ago, none have officially taken office.

The delay is primarily due to the absence of representatives from women’s organizations and human rights groups, leaving the CEP incomplete. This has stalled the organization of elections, which are seen as essential for restoring political stability in the country.

Recent reports suggest that the Presidential Transition Council (CPT) is considering appointing Father Gardy Maisonneuve to represent the human rights sector in the CEP, despite previous support for Me Gédéon Jean, who had already been chosen by relevant organizations. Father Maisonneuve has garnered the support of over 80 human rights groups, which have sent a formal request to the CPT urging respect for the original decision.

This ongoing impasse has raised concerns about the government’s ability to manage the political transition effectively. Despite mounting international pressure, including from BINUH, bureaucratic delays and internal disagreements are jeopardizing the electoral process and prolonging the country’s political crisis.
