Guy Philippe regains his freedom after returning to the country
After more than three days of detention at the Central Directorate of Judicial Police (DCPJ), Guy Philippe, a former elected official from Grand’Anse, finally regains his freedom. His return to the country follows his confession of guilt for drug trafficking in the United States.
A controversial figure in Haitian politics, Guy Philippe had been imprisoned at the DCPJ in connection with a case related to his previous activities. Arrested in January 2017 in Haiti at the request of U.S. authorities, the former senator pleaded guilty to drug trafficking in a U.S. court. After serving his sentence in the United States, he returned to the country to face new charges.
The former elected official from Grand’Anse, a key player during the political crisis of 2004 in Haiti, raises persistent questions about his possible return to Haitian politics and his influence in the country.
