Controversy surrounding allocation of funds for haitian carnival celebrations
This year, the Haitian government allocated a colossal sum of nearly 200 million gourdes for the organization of carnival festivities across the country. This decision has sparked criticism and debates regarding the use of public funds in a context where numerous urgent needs persist.
The distribution of funds has been uneven, with the majority of interim cartels receiving amounts ranging from 2 to 5 million gourdes. However, some have received much larger sums, raising questions about the criteria for allocation.
Among the fund recipients, the Interim Cartel of Jacmel received an impressive check of 20 million gourdes, while the Municipality of Cap Haïtien benefited from an allocation of 15 million. However, it is the Municipality of Port-au-Prince that received the highest amount, with funding of 50 million gourdes.
These figures have fueled criticism regarding the opacity and inefficiency of public fund utilization. Many citizens wonder if such sums could be better invested in areas such as education, health, or economic development.
