Concerns Rise Over Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s Commitment to Democratic Transition

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry is raising concerns about his true intentions regarding the country’s democratic transition, despite his recent promises to hold general elections by August 2025.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) announced this Wednesday that Ariel Henry had committed to holding general elections in Haiti no later than August 31, 2025. This declaration comes at a time when the credibility of the Haitian Prime Minister is seriously questioned, as he has failed to uphold his previous commitments to democracy.

Indeed, the December 21 agreement, which set conditions for the democratic transition, expired without any of its articles being fully honored. Only the Transitional High Council has been established, while other agreed-upon measures to restore political stability and organize elections have been neglected.

These new promises by Ariel Henry raise doubts about his real willingness to relinquish power once elections take place. Many fear that he may seek to consolidate his authority and extend his mandate beyond 2025.

The international community, particularly CARICOM, is closely monitoring the situation in Haiti, emphasizing the importance of adhering to democratic principles and ensuring a smooth transition of power. Failure to do so could further exacerbate political instability and hinder progress towards a more democratic future for Haiti.
