North-West Haiti: 12 Dead and a Government Nowhere to Be Found

Torrential rains that recently hit Haiti’s North-West department have left a heavy human toll. In Saint-Louis-du-Nord, 12 people have died, according to Civil Protection authorities. Beyond the tragedy, public outrage is growing over the government’s failure to respond effectively.

Once again, the state appears absent in the face of a predictable disaster during the rainy season. There was no early warning system, no rapid emergency deployment, and no structured assistance for affected families.

Residents have been left to fend for themselves, struggling without shelter, food, or clean water. Meanwhile, official promises regarding disaster risk management and citizen protection remain unfulfilled. This catastrophe underscores deep governance failures and a chronic inability to handle humanitarian crises. For many observers, this is not just a natural disaster—it is a failure of leadership and responsibility.
