A significant advancement was achieved on Monday by the United Nations Security Council with the adoption of Resolution 2699. This resolution gives the green light for the establishment of the International Coalition for Security in Haiti in response to the growing power of criminal gangs and the persistent security challenges the country has been facing for some time. Supporting Haiti: UN Security Council Awaits Report on Options

The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2692 (2023), renewing the mandate of the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (BINUH) for a period of one year. The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has been tasked with submitting a written report to the Council within 30 days, in consultation with Haiti. This report will describe the support options that the United Nations can provide to improve the security situation in Haiti, including combating illicit trafficking and diversion of weapons, providing additional training to the Haitian National Police, as well as supporting a non-UN multinational force or a potential peacekeeping operation.
