UN orders evacuation of non-essential staff amid rising violence

The United Nations has ordered the evacuation of all its non-essential workers in Haiti due to increased violence from continued protests in the streets of the country, alleging that UN personnel are vulnerable to kidnappings and destruction. possible attacks.

The evacuation order comes just two months after the UN Security Council voted to extend the mandate of its integrated office in Haiti by one year and increase its staff.

However, UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the violence in all its forms that has occurred in the country in recent weeks and called on all actors to work together to de-escalate the situation and ensure “a return to calm”.
