Justice Clears Romel Bell Despite Corruption Allegations

The decision by the Port-au-Prince Court of Appeal to clear former Customs Director General Romel Bell has sparked widespread concern.

According to a report from Haiti’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ULCC), confirmed by an investigative order issued by Judge Jean Wilner Morin, Bell’s assets increased by 748.77% compared to his legitimate income.

Despite these findings, the Court ruled in his favor, arguing that the judge’s order did not legally exist. The ruling has raised serious questions among legal observers.

A jurist interviewed by our newsroom stated that the Court should have instead annulled the initial proceedings and ordered a new investigation.

It is worth noting that Romel Bell is already sanctioned by the United States and Canada and is named in a United Nations sanctions report.
